Compare Emergency Loans in South Africa
An emergency loan is not a separate class of credit under the National Credit Act. It is a use: a once-off bill that arrived before the savings did. The products below are short contracts that a borrower might use for that bill. Several are the same products already listed under short-term loans.
Nothing on this page is a promise of same-day payment. Nedbank’s own material says a digital application is not a guarantee of fast disbursement. Confirm timing on the provider’s own quotation. Each card shows the date that product was checked.
What counts as an emergency loan here
This comparison treats emergency as a borrower need, not a regulated product name. Absa Instant Loan and Express Loan, FNB Temporary Loan, Nedbank Quick Loan and Letsatsi Short Term Loan are included because their published terms are short enough for an unforeseen expense. CreditBar, CashGist, Kredio, LendPlus and PrimeLoans appear because the same short-term loan can be used for an unexpected bill. They are labelled as those products, not as a specialist emergency brand.
RCS publishes a personal-loan page for emergencies, from R2 000 to R300 000 over 12 to 60 months. Capfin refers to unforeseen expenses on a personal loan of 6 to 24 months. Neither page is a promise of same-day payment.
Price the invoice first. Borrowing a round number “for breathing room” adds interest to money you have not yet assigned to a bill.
If someone asks for a cash fee before any credit is granted, or for your card PIN, stop. That is an advance-fee warning from the National Credit Regulator’s consumer guidance, not a normal application step.

Each card uses the product published for this page. A product that also appears under another heading is still the same product. A missing fee is not shown as zero.

Compare selected products
Choose up to three. This view does not rank a cheapest or best product, and it does not estimate an instalment.
No products selected.
Illustrative repayment calculator
Type your own amount, annual rate and fees. The result is an illustration, not a provider quotation. It assumes equal monthly instalments. It does not price a loan counted in days, a student interest-only period, or a fee that was left blank.
What to check before you apply
The bill
Match the loan to the invoice. A funeral, a medical co-payment or a repair has a number. A celebration does not become an emergency because the advert says so.
Who you are paying
Use the provider’s own website from the card. Do not pay a person who contacted you from a search result or a social-media profile.
The next month
The debit order remains after the emergency. If income also stopped, a short loan can be the start of a second problem.
Total cost still matters when the bill is urgent
Speed does not remove interest, initiation fees or insurance. Absa’s Instant Loan shows an initiation fee of R80 up to 10% of principal, excluding VAT, and a due date of about 35 days.
FNB’s temporary loan example has 0% interest and an initiation fee, and it is limited to existing FNB transactional clients of at least six months. That restriction is part of the product, not a footnote.
Consumer protection
A registered credit provider must assess affordability and give a pre-agreement quotation. These cards are not that quotation. Interest, initiation fees, service fees and credit life insurance are set out by the provider for the agreement you are offered.
Registration numbers are not shown as verified. Check the legal entity on the National Credit Regulator register, including cancelled and lapsed entries. Early settlement, arrears and default consequences depend on the contract and the National Credit Act.
Personal information you submit on a provider’s own site is their responsibility under POPIA. WiT Money does not take loan applications on this page. Information Regulator
How WiT Money compares these products
Each category keeps its own products. A short-term amount is not copied onto a student loan, and a bank study loan is not described as NSFAS funding. Empty fees and amounts stay blank.
Nothing is sorted as cheapest, best or easiest to get. The default order is alphabetical by provider, then product. A listed name is not a recommendation. No provider is paying for a placement. The button opens the provider’s homepage.
Bad-credit products stay ordinary credit assessments. The Standard Bank student loan without surety stays closed to new applications. NSFAS stays a public scheme, and its bursary is separate from the loan scheme.
Questions readers ask
Is an instant cash loan paid the same day?
This comparison does not establish same-day payment for every provider. Read the provider’s own timing, and treat any guarantee of same-day cash as a claim you still have to verify.
Why do some names also appear on the short-term page?
They are the same products. The emergency page is the use case. Counting both rows as two different lenders would double-count Absa, FNB, Nedbank and Letsatsi.
What if I cannot afford even a small instalment?
A loan is the wrong tool. A payment arrangement with the person you owe, or debt review if agreements are already unaffordable, does not add a new debit order.
