What should you check before choosing insurance?

Cover

Check which events, losses or expenses the policy includes. A name on the brochure is not the list of claims that will be paid.

Premiums

Compare the monthly or annual payment, and ask how that premium can change. A starting premium is not a promise that it stays the same.

Excesses and limits

Check the amount you may pay towards a claim, and any limit on the benefit. A higher limit is not the same as a claim that will be paid in full.

Exclusions and waiting periods

Read what is not covered, and when a benefit starts. Waiting periods and exclusions differ. They are not the same on every policy.

Vehicle and travel

Protect your vehicle and your journeys

Explore insurance for vehicles and travel. Understand cover types, the excess you may pay, exclusions and important policy conditions.

Life and funeral

Protect yourself and the people who depend on you

Understand life, funeral and income-related insurance. Income protection and disability cover are different products. A policy definition decides which events qualify.

Healthcare

Understand healthcare cover in South Africa

Explore medical schemes, gap cover and health insurance. These are different products. A medical scheme is not the same thing as a health insurance policy.

A medical scheme is regulated under the Medical Schemes Act and must provide prescribed minimum benefits. Gap cover is insurance for certain shortfalls, and it does not replace scheme membership. Health insurance is a different product. It does not automatically include those prescribed minimum benefits. Options, limits and networks vary.

Home and property

Protect your home and belongings

Explore insurance for residential buildings and household contents. Buildings cover and contents cover protect different assets. One does not automatically include the other.

Business

Protect your South African business

Explore business insurance for commercial assets, liability, vehicles and operational risks. The policy decides which of those risks are included.

Other cover

Explore additional insurance options

Understand specialised insurance and the policy conditions that may apply, including waiting periods, annual limits and exclusions.
