Credit reports: what you need to know

Your credit history

A credit report is a record of relevant credit information, including reported accounts, repayment behaviour and other data the law permits.

Read the section

Free access

Section 72 of the National Credit Act lets you inspect the file without charge once in any 12-month period. A paid monitoring product is optional.

Read the section

Errors can be challenged

You can challenge inaccurate information. The bureau must follow the statutory process. A challenge is not a request to hide a true default.

A report is not a credit decision

Lenders may use the file in an assessment. Neither the report nor a score guarantees approval or a decline.

How credit reporting works

  1. Step 1

    Credit information is reported

Credit providers and other permitted suppliers send relevant account and payment information to registered credit bureaux. Who reports, and how often, is not the same everywhere.

  2. Step 2

The bureau keeps a credit record

The bureau compiles the information it is allowed to hold about you. Two bureaux can hold different accounts.

  3. Step 3

Access is for a permitted purpose

A registered bureau may release consumer credit information only for a purpose allowed by the National Credit Act and its regulations. A business does not get the file merely by asking.

  4. Step 4

You can inspect and challenge it

Section 72 gives you access, including one free inspection in any 12-month period, and a way to challenge information that is wrong.

Credit bureaux you can approach

The NCR register page reported 55 registered credit bureaux on 28 October 2026. These three are consumer names people often meet. WiT Money does not issue reports and does not rank bureaux. Compuscan is not shown as its own card.

There is no fee filter and no ranking. Prices for extra reports and monitoring were not verified.

TransUnion

Credit bureau

TransUnion Credit Bureau (Pty) Ltd

The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB4 on 28 October 2026.

Statutory free inspection
Section 72 of the National Credit Act gives one free inspection in any 12-month period, and another after a successful challenge so you can check the correction. A further report may be charged.
Report access
A separate consumer-report login was not confirmed in this check. Use the request route on TransUnion’s own site.
Optional paid services
Not verified. No price is shown, and a subscription is not required for the free inspection.
Dispute channel
A bureau-specific dispute URL was not confirmed. Use the process on the bureau’s own site. The NCR guideline is linked below.

Experian

Credit bureau

Experian South Africa (Pty) Ltd

The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB16 on 28 October 2026. An older Experian Bureau (Pty) Ltd registration, NCRCB3, is on the NCR’s voluntarily cancelled list.

Statutory free inspection
The same section 72 free-inspection right applies. It is not the same thing as a paid monitoring subscription.
Report access
The register lists www.experian.co.za as the credit-report website. A separate report-login path was not confirmed.
Optional paid services
Not verified. No price is shown, and a subscription is not required for the free inspection.
Dispute channel
A bureau-specific dispute URL was not confirmed. Use the process on the bureau’s own site. The NCR guideline is linked below.

XDS

Credit bureau

Xpert Decision Systems (Pty) Ltd

The NCR credit bureau register page showed registration NCRCB5, trading as XDS, on 28 October 2026.

Statutory free inspection
Section 72 still gives the statutory free inspection. XDS also points consumers to Splendi.
Report access
XDS’s site tells consumers to get a report and score on Splendi, and the NCR register lists www.splendi.co.za as the credit-report website. Splendi’s own wording about free repeat access is a product statement, not the statutory once-a-year right.
Optional paid services
Not verified. No price is shown, and a subscription is not required for the free inspection.
Dispute channel
A bureau-specific dispute URL was not confirmed. Use the process on the bureau’s own site. The NCR guideline is linked below.

How to get your credit report in South Africa

  1. Choose a registered credit bureau. The directory below names TransUnion, Experian and XDS. The NCR register lists many more, and not every registered bureau offers a public consumer page.

  2. Open that bureau’s own website. Do not use a lookalike link from a message.

  3. Follow its identity check. WiT Money does not ask for your ID number or a copy of the report.

  4. Request the report that bureau offers. The steps are not the same at every bureau.

  5. View it in the bureau’s own secure process.

  6. Read the accounts and the payment history, not only a score on the same screen.

  7. Keep the file private. Do not email it to someone who offered to fix it.

  8. If something is wrong, use the dispute steps further down.

Is a credit report free in South Africa?

Statutory inspection

Free once in any 12-month period, again after a successful challenge, and if a court or the Tribunal orders it.

Further copies

The bureau may charge. The amount is not verified on this page, so no price is shown.

Monitoring and identity products

Optional. You do not have to buy them to read the file or to lodge a dispute.

Third-party apps

An app is not automatically the section 72 inspection. Start with the registered bureau.

How to read your credit report

Personal information

Your name, identity details and other recorded identifiers. A mismatch can attach the wrong accounts.

Credit accounts

Reported agreements, balances, limits and whether the account is open or closed. Not every bureau shows every field.

Payment history

The pattern of payments the credit provider reported, including arrears. One late month is not a judgment.

Credit enquiries

Records that someone asked for information. Your own inspection is not an application for credit.

Public records and judgments

Court information where the law allows it on the file. Check the case and whether it still stands.

Debt review

A reported debt-counselling status. It is a formal process under the Act, not another word for a low score.

Adverse information

Negative classifications the rules allow the bureau to keep. How long each type stays is not one number, and paying the debt does not wipe every trace on the same day.

Example report

Illustrative only. Example Consumer is not a real person. Nothing you select is sent to WiT Money or to a credit bureau.

Personal details

Name: Example Consumer. ID number: not shown.

Check the name and identity details. A wrong ID number can attach another person’s accounts, or leave yours off the file.

Accounts

Example store account. Status: open. This account is fictional.

Each account should name the credit provider and say whether it is open or closed. If you do not recognise the provider, do not assume fraud yet. It may be a reporting error or a mismatch. Dispute it and ask the provider.

Balance

Amount owing: illustrated only. No rand figure is a real balance.

Compare the balance and any limit with your own statement. Bureaux do not all show the same fields, and a balance can lag the last payment you made.

Payment status

One month marked in arrears. The month is not a real history.

Payment history is the pattern of on-time and late payments the bureau was given. One late month is not the same as a judgment. If the month was paid, keep the statement and dispute the status.

Enquiries

Example credit provider. Date: an illustration.

An enquiry records that someone asked to see information. Your own inspection is not a loan application. A string of applications you did not make is worth questioning.

Public information

No judgment is shown on this example.

A judgment is a court outcome, not a late payment. Check the court, the case number and whether it has been rescinded. This example contains none.

Disputed information

Example store account, marked as challenged.

A challenge should pause reporting of that information while it is investigated. Accurate adverse information is not removed because it is unfavourable. Keep the reference number.

How to dispute incorrect credit report information

  1. Step 1. Identify the information

Mark the account, balance, status or personal detail. A general complaint that the file looks bad is not a dispute of a specific entry.

  2. Step 2. Gather evidence

Statements, a paid-up letter, proof of identity, or the court order. Send documents only through the bureau’s own channel.

  3. Step 3. Lodge the dispute

Use that bureau’s process. WiT Money cannot lodge it for you.

  4. Step 4. Keep the reference number

Save the case number and the correspondence.

  5. Step 5. Follow the investigation

The NCR’s December 2025 guideline says the bureau must take reasonable steps to find credible evidence within 20 business days after the challenge is filed, then give you that evidence or remove the information if it cannot. An incomplete complaint is not the same starting point. The 20 business days are not a promise that every case ends then.

  6. Step 6. Review the outcome

Check whether the entry was confirmed, corrected or removed. Section 72 also gives a free inspection after a successful challenge so you can see the correction.

  7. Step 7. Consider escalation

If you receive evidence and still disagree, section 72 gives you 20 business days after receiving it to ask the National Credit Regulator to investigate. Accurate adverse information is not deleted because it is unfavourable.

NCR guideline on credible evidence, December 2025

What if you see an account you don’t recognise?

It might be a reporting error, a mismatch of names or identity numbers, unauthorised credit, or something else. Do not decide it is fraud before you have asked.

  • Contact the bureau through the official site, not through a link in an unexpected message.
  • Contact the credit provider named on the entry, using a phone number or site you have checked yourself.
  • Lodge a dispute and keep the evidence.
  • If an account of yours may be compromised, secure it with that provider.
  • Do not email an ID document to an address you cannot verify. Phishing often imitates a bureau or a court.

What happens to your credit report after you pay a debt?

Ordinary payments

The credit provider reports updates on its own schedule. A payment today is not guaranteed to show tomorrow.

Settled accounts

Paid up should be reflected when it is reported. The history of earlier arrears can remain under the rule for that type of information.

Judgments

Paying the debt is not the same as rescinding a judgment. Court status has to be dealt with as a court matter.

Debt review

This is a formal rearrangement under the Act. It is not cleared by describing yourself as a better payer. New credit is restricted during the process.

“Blacklisted” is a colloquial way of talking about adverse information. It is not a single official status. Nobody honest can promise to delete accurate adverse information. Debt review explained.

Credit report vs credit score

Credit report

  • The recorded accounts, payments and other permitted information.
  • You can inspect it and challenge what is wrong.
  • It is the document to read before you argue with a number.

Credit score

  • A number from one scoring model. Another bureau can use another scale.
  • It does not replace an affordability assessment.
  • It does not guarantee that a lender will say yes or no.

Understand credit scores

Who can see your credit report?

Consumer credit information is protected. A registered credit bureau may release it for a purpose prescribed under the National Credit Act, not because someone is curious. POPIA also applies to personal information. Whether a particular landlord, employer or business has a permitted purpose depends on the circumstances. This page does not treat any of those groups as having open access.

How this page was researched

Registration lines were read from the NCR register on 28 October 2026. The free-inspection wording follows section 72 of the National Credit Act. The 20-business-day explanation follows the NCR’s December 2025 credible-evidence guideline and section 72. WiT Money is a publisher. It is not a credit bureau, a credit provider or a debt counsellor, and it is not endorsed by the NCR. Corrections.

Still unchecked

  • Experian’s consumer login path. The homepage is the address on the NCR register. The site blocked an automated read.
  • TransUnion’s separate report-login address. It was not confirmed, so the card does not invent one.
  • A dispute URL on each bureau’s own site. The NCR guideline is linked instead.
  • Current rand fees for extra reports, monitoring and identity products.
  • Retention periods for each record type. They are not quoted, because the regulation was not re-read line by line for this page.
  • Whether a former Compuscan consumer brand still has its own public report service.
  • A complete list of prescribed purposes for which a bureau may release a file.

Questions readers ask

What is a credit report?

It is the record of credit information a bureau holds about you: reported accounts, repayment behaviour and other information the law allows. It is not a decision to lend.

How do I get my credit report in South Africa?

Use a registered credit bureau’s own website and its identity check. The directory on this page names three consumer bureaux. Other registered bureaux are on the NCR register. WiT Money cannot fetch the report.

Can I get a free credit report?

Yes. Section 72 of the National Credit Act gives you a free inspection once in any 12-month period, and another free inspection after a successful challenge. A court or the Tribunal can also order access. A monitoring subscription is separate and optional.

How often can I get a free report?

Once within any period of twelve months, as of right, plus the extra inspection after a successful challenge. Other copies may be charged. This page does not publish a rand fee, because a current fee was not confirmed.

Which credit bureaux operate in South Africa?

The NCR register page reported 55 registered credit bureaux on 28 October 2026. This page profiles TransUnion Credit Bureau (Pty) Ltd, Experian South Africa (Pty) Ltd and Xpert Decision Systems (Pty) Ltd, trading as XDS. That is not the full list, and not every registered bureau has a public consumer portal.

What information appears in a credit report?

Often your identity details, credit accounts, payment history, enquiries and, where the law allows, judgments or a debt-review status. The exact layout differs by bureau. The example on this page is fictional.

Is a credit report the same as a credit score?

No. The report is the file. A score is a number from one model. Lenders may use either, both, or their own assessment of income and expenses. Read the credit scores page for the number, and stay here for the file.

Who can access my credit report?

A registered bureau may release consumer credit information only for a purpose the National Credit Act and its regulations allow. This page does not publish a complete list of those purposes. An employer, a landlord or another business does not get the file merely by asking.

How long does an incorrect entry take to investigate?

The NCR guideline describes 20 business days for the bureau to seek credible evidence after a challenge is filed. That is not a guarantee that an incomplete complaint is resolved in 20 days. If you are given evidence and disagree, you have 20 business days after receiving it to ask the NCR to investigate.

How do I dispute incorrect information?

Identify the entry, collect evidence, lodge the dispute with the bureau that holds it, and keep the reference number. Do not pay someone who promises to delete it.

What if a loan or account is not mine?

It may be an error, a mismatch, or unauthorised credit. Contact the bureau and the credit provider through their own channels, dispute the entry, and keep your evidence. Do not send identity documents to an address you have not verified.

Does paying a debt remove the record?

Not automatically, and not in the same way for every type of information. A payment should be reported, but the history of arrears, a judgment or a debt-review flag can remain under its own rule. Ask the bureau which rule applies to that entry.

How long does a default stay on my report?

It depends on the type of information and the regulation that applies. This page does not give one number of years for every default, judgment and flag, because those periods are not the same.

What happens after a judgment?

A judgment is a court result. Paying the debt is not the same as rescinding the judgment. Check the case details on the report and take court or legal questions to the right office. This page is not legal advice.

What happens after debt review?

Debt review is a formal process under the National Credit Act. A reported status is not removed by an ordinary extra payment, and new credit is restricted while you are in the process. Clearance has its own rules. See the debt review page, and ask a registered debt counsellor or the NCR.

Can I remove accurate negative information?

No. A dispute is for information that is wrong, incomplete or not lawfully kept. Genuine arrears are not erased because they are inconvenient. WiT Money does not offer credit repair.

Does checking my own report affect my score?

Your own inspection is not a credit application. Applications you make to lenders can be recorded as enquiries. Do not apply for several loans just to see what a score does.

How do I protect myself against credit repair scams?

Do not pay an upfront fee to wipe a report, raise a score by a date, or remove accurate information. Use the bureau’s own site and the NCR. Never hand over internet-banking details.
