Compare Credit Life Insurance in South Africa
Credit life is tied to a credit agreement. Settling that debt is not the same as paying a general life-insurance benefit to a beneficiary.
Premiums, excesses, contributions and cover depend on your circumstances and the policy or scheme rules. Confirm the final terms before you buy. Information checked 29 October 2026.
Compare providers
The provider name links to the WiT Money profile where one exists. The gold button opens the recorded website. It is not a quote and not an application.
3 of 3 products, in provider name order. A missing premium, contribution or excess is not shown as zero, and nothing is ranked as cheapest. A filter matches the published line. It does not decide that you qualify.

How to read this comparison
Credit life can cover death, disability, and sometimes retrenchment, so that the credit agreement is settled or the instalments are paid for a period. The National Credit Act and the credit life regulations set rules for some agreements, including maximum premiums in prescribed cases. Not every credit agreement uses the same benefits, and the cover is not always optional in the same way.
A retrenchment benefit usually has a waiting period and does not cover resignation or dismissal for misconduct. Paying the debt is not the same as paying a life benefit to a family member.
Credit life insurance settles, or pays instalments on, a specific credit agreement if an insured event happens. Lenders offer it with personal loans, vehicle finance and store accounts. For some small loans the way it is sold is tightly constrained. You can often use an existing policy instead of the lender's policy, if it cedes enough cover.
The premium is part of the cost of the credit. A loan that looks cheaper on interest can be more expensive once credit life is added. Ask for the cost with and without it, in writing, and read whether retrenchment is included. Many people think it is. Sometimes it is not.
How the cover works
The event
Death is the core benefit. Disability, retrenchment and inability to earn an income are only included if the policy says so, and retrenchment benefits are usually short.
The amount
It should track the debt. You do not need credit life of R200 000 on a R20 000 loan. A decreasing benefit that follows the balance is the usual shape.
Substitution
Where the law allows, you may provide your own cover and cede it. The lender can require proof that the cover is enough. They cannot invent a rule the Act does not give them.
What to check
Events covered
Death, disability, retrenchment, or only some of those.
Premium
In rand per month, next to the instalment.
Term
Whether it matches the credit agreement.
Exclusions
Pre-existing conditions and the first months of employment for retrenchment.
Risks
- Signing because the consultant said the loan would otherwise be declined, without checking whether the cover is compulsory for that agreement.
- Thinking retrenchment cover will pay the bond for a year. Read the months.
- A store-card policy you forgot you had.
Claims and complaints
Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.
How WiT Money compares these products
Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.
Questions readers ask
Do I have to take the lender's credit life?
Not in every case. For many agreements you may substitute your own policy if it meets the requirements. Ask for that option in writing and keep the reply. Some agreements are treated differently. Check the current NCA regulations rather than a salesperson's summary.
Does it pay if I lose my job?
Only if retrenchment is a benefit, and only for the period and the definition in the policy. Resignation is not retrenchment.
Is the premium a fee?
It is a premium for insurance. It still increases what leaves your bank account every month. Include it when you compare loans.
