Compare Travel Insurance Providers in South Africa

Explore travel policies sold to people in South Africa. Medical treatment abroad, a cancelled trip and lost baggage are different benefits, and a policy does not cover every country or activity.

Premiums, excesses, contributions and cover depend on your circumstances and the policy or scheme rules. Confirm the final terms before you buy. Information checked 29 October 2026.

Compare providers

The provider name links to the WiT Money profile where one exists. The gold button opens the recorded website. It is not a quote and not an application.

2 of 2 products, in provider name order. A missing premium, contribution or excess is not shown as zero, and nothing is ranked as cheapest. A filter matches the published line. It does not decide that you qualify.

Estimate with your own figures

Type the amounts you want to test. The result uses those amounts only. It does not fetch a quote, and it does not decide a claim.

Leave a box empty when you do not have that figure. An empty box is not R0. This does not approve a claim or set your premium.

How to read this comparison

Emergency medical expenses, evacuation, cancellation, baggage and personal liability are separate benefits with their own limits. A policy can exclude a country, a pre-existing condition, or an activity such as skiing or motorcycling. Age limits and the length of the trip matter.

Buying the policy after you have already fallen ill, or after a travel warning is in place, can affect a claim. This page does not promise that a hospital abroad will accept the policy as payment.

A private hospital overseas can cost more than a year of local medical aid in a few days. Many medical schemes pay a limited rand amount outside South Africa, or nothing, unless you bought a travel benefit. Read the scheme rules before you fly. Travel insurance is the policy built for the trip.

It is not a refund for a holiday you got bored of. Cancellation cover has a list of reasons. Missed connections, pre-existing conditions and adventure sports are where claims fail.

How the cover works

Medical emergency

The policy pays for emergency treatment and, when the wording says so, evacuation. You usually have to call the assistance number before treatment that is not a genuine emergency.

Cancellation and curtailment

Named reasons such as illness or a death in the family. Changing your mind is not one of them.

Belongings

Baggage limits are modest. Expensive cameras need to be specified. The airline's liability for a lost bag is not the same as your policy.

What to check

  • Medical limit

The rand or foreign-currency cap for medical costs.

  • Region

Southern Africa is not the same price or cover as worldwide, and the United States is often excluded unless you add it.

  • Pre-existing conditions

    Declared and accepted, or excluded.

  • Activities

Driving, hiking, diving, or anything else you actually plan to do.

Risks

  • Travelling on a scheme benefit you have not read.
  • A pre-existing condition you hoped would not matter.
  • A rental car excess that the travel policy does not cover. That is often a separate add-on.

Claims and complaints

Report a claim to the insurer, scheme or administrator named on your documents, in the way the policy or scheme rules describe. WiT Money does not decide the claim. If you have complained to that organisation and you are still not satisfied, the National Financial Ombud Scheme handles certain financial complaints, and the Council for Medical Schemes handles medical scheme complaints. Take the policy schedule, the rejection letter and the claim documents with you.

How WiT Money compares these products

Products stay in provider name order. A car excess, a funeral benefit, a medical scheme contribution and a pet plan are not sorted against one another. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest. A listed name is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not sell the policy. Where this site has the provider's logo, it is shown. Otherwise the name is shown without a mark. An FSP number or a scheme registration number is not printed unless the recorded page already states it, and it is not a register check by WiT Money.

Questions readers ask

Does medical aid work overseas?

Sometimes, for a limited benefit and a limited number of days. Read your option. Do not assume a hospital plan pays a foreign emergency in full.

When should I buy the policy?

Before you leave, and early enough that cancellation cover has started. Buying it at the airport is often too late for the trip you are already on.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Only if the policy says so after you declared them. An undeclared condition is a common reason a medical claim is refused.
