Estimate your business credit card costs
A card can copy its published monthly or annual fee. It does not copy an interest rate, because none was recorded as a current figure.
Interest-free days and what happens if you pay less
An interest-free period is not a permanent zero rate. FNB Gold and Platinum business cards are described as up to 35 qualifying interest-free days. Standard Bank's business credit card is described as up to 55 days, subject to terms, with a minimum repayment of 5%. Those lines are not applied to Absa, Nedbank or the fuel cards. A purchase near the start of a billing cycle can have fewer interest-free days than the maximum.
A hypothetical R10 000 balance at 18% a year, with no fees and no new spending, accrues R150 of interest in one month. Paying R10 150 clears that illustration. Paying less leaves a balance that can attract interest again. Paying the full qualifying balance can avoid purchase interest where the card's own terms allow it. The monthly or annual card fee can still apply. This example is not a bank quotation, and it does not use an interest-free period.
Employee cards, rewards and who is liable
FNB Gold mentions business spend controls. Standard Bank's credit card mentions expense tracking. The corporate charge card mentions company spending controls. The garage and petro cards are for vehicle costs. Individual limits, extra-card fees and approval workflows are not shown, because they were not recorded. A bank control is not the same thing as accounting software.
Rewards and travel benefits are named only where the product line mentions them. No earning rate, cap or expiry is printed, so no cash value is calculated. A benefit is not a saving until it beats the fees and any interest.
The business named on the agreement is the borrower. An employee who holds a card is not automatically that borrower. A director who signs surety can be personally liable for the debt the surety covers. Limited liability does not undo a valid personal suretyship. The National Credit Act does not apply to every business credit agreement in the same way. A juristic person, the facility and the statutory exclusions can change the position. No NCR number is printed on these cards.
Banks still identify the business, the directors and often the beneficial owners under FICA. The documents are not the same for a sole proprietor and a private company. An existing business account is named as a condition on the FNB cards. It is not assumed for every other card.
Common questions
- Is a business credit card a debit card?
- No. A debit card spends money already in the business account. A credit card is a facility. A charge card is described here as needing settlement in full. A fuel or garage card is for vehicle costs, not general business spending.
- Does up to 55 days mean every purchase is interest-free for 55 days?
- No. FNB's lines say up to 35 qualifying days. Standard Bank's business credit card says up to 55 days, subject to terms, and a minimum repayment of 5%. The actual gap depends on when you buy and when you pay. Cash advances are not described as interest-free.
- Who owes the money?
- The borrower is the business named on the agreement. The employee who uses a card is not automatically that borrower. A director who signs a suretyship can take on a personal promise. A private company does not cancel a valid suretyship.
- Are rewards a saving?
- Only if the benefit is worth more than the fees and any interest. No rand value is calculated here, because the earning rate, the cap and the exclusions were not recorded as a complete programme.
- Does deposit insurance cover the card?
- No. A business credit card is a credit facility, not a savings deposit. Deposit insurance does not protect the business against outstanding card debt.
How WiT Money compares these cards
Cards stay in bank name order unless you sort by the published monthly fee. An annual fee is not folded into that sort. Nothing is ranked as the cheapest or the easiest approval. A listed card is not a recommendation, and WiT Money does not issue it.
Related comparisons
A business bank account holds deposits. A business overdraft is a revolving facility on that account. Neither fee is part of the card fee shown here. The credit card calculator uses figures you type. It does not load a rate from this page.
