Medical aid
How medical aid works in South Africa
A medical scheme, a gap policy and a health-insurance policy are not the same product. The scheme is the one registered with the Council for Medical Schemes.

People say medical aid when they mean a medical scheme. The scheme is registered under the Medical Schemes Act. You join an option. The option's rules say what is paid in hospital, what is paid for chronic medicine, and what happens to day-to-day bills.
The administrator is the company that runs the cards and the calls. It is not the scheme. Mixing the names up makes it harder to complain to the right place and harder to read the rules.
Hospital plans and savings
A hospital option is there for in-hospital events and prescribed minimum benefits. It is a poor product to buy if you expected it to pay every GP visit. A savings account on a fuller option is your own money, portioned out of the contribution. When it is empty, day-to-day claims are yours until any threshold benefit starts.
Prescribed minimum benefits
Schemes must cover a defined set of emergencies, chronic conditions and hospital care. That is not a promise of any private room or any specialist rate. Network rules and designated providers still apply.
Gap cover and health insurance
Gap cover pays some shortfalls between a scheme rate and a specialist's charge. It needs the scheme. Health insurance pays capped benefits and is not a scheme. If someone says a policy is medical aid, ask for the CMS registration number of the scheme and check it.
Questions readers ask
Can a scheme refuse me?
Open schemes have acceptance rules that are different from ordinary insurance, and they can still apply waiting periods and late-joiner penalties. Restricted schemes are only for a defined group, such as an employer.
Do I need gap cover?
Only if you are on a scheme and the specialists you are likely to use charge above scheme rate. It does not replace the contribution.
