How funeral cover works in South Africa
Funeral cover pays a cash benefit when a covered person dies, usually after a waiting period. It is not a savings plan and it is not a bond settler.

A funeral arrives with a bill and very little time. Funeral cover is bought so that bill does not have to be borrowed. The policy pays a stated amount if a covered person dies while the policy is in force and the waiting period for that cause of death has passed.
Families often pay a burial society, an employer scheme and a bank policy at the same time. That can be sensible. It can also be three waiting periods and three premiums for less cover than one clear policy. Write down who is covered, for how much, and where the policy document is.
Waiting periods
Natural death is often excluded for the first few months. Accidental death is often covered sooner. If you replace a policy, ask whether the new insurer will waive the waiting period. If they will not, keep the old policy until the new one can pay.
Who the money is for
The benefit is cash, paid to the beneficiary or as the contract states. It does not have to be spent at a particular parlour unless you bought that kind of plan. Tell the beneficiary the policy exists.
What it will not do
It will not clear a home loan. It will not replace a salary for ten years. Those are life-cover questions. A funeral policy with no cash value also pays nothing back if you stop the debit order, and stopping can mean a new waiting period if you start again.
Questions readers ask
Can I cover my parents?
Many family plans allow it, at a premium and a benefit the schedule states. You need an insurable interest, and the age limits are real.
What if the debit order bounces?
The policy can lapse. A lapsed policy does not pay. Catch a failed debit order quickly and ask the insurer what the status is.
