Building an emergency fund

An emergency fund is cash you can reach when income stops or a bill cannot wait. There is no single number of months that suits every household.

Reviewed 29 October 2026 by the WiT Money editorial team. This is general information, not a recommendation from a named adviser.

Key points

  • The target is your essential monthly costs times the number of months you choose.
  • Keep it in an account you can actually withdraw from.
  • A card limit is debt, not savings.

Essential costs are rent or the bond, food, transport, school fees, medical aid and the debts you must pay. They are not the full lifestyle. Multiply that monthly figure by the number of months you want covered. Three months is a common starting point. A single income, a commission job or a visa that can end may need more. A household with a large accessible deposit may need less. The calculator does the multiplication. It does not choose the months for you.

An illustration: essentials of R15 000 and a three-month target is R45 000. If R10 000 is already saved and you can add R2 000 a month, the gap is about a year and a half before interest. Interest helps. It does not replace the contribution.

Where to keep it

Use a savings account you can reach within a few days. A fixed deposit, a tax-free equity fund or a retirement annuity is a poor address for this money. Withdrawing from a tax-free account wastes contribution room. Withdrawing from a retirement fund can be taxed and is often not allowed.

Irregular income

If your pay arrives in uneven months, base the target on the essential costs, not on an average that hides a quiet month. Save a percentage of each receipt rather than a fixed debit order you will reverse.

School fees and a house deposit

Those are goals with dates. Keep them separate from the emergency fund so a school invoice does not empty the fund you meant for a lost salary. A house deposit that you need on a known month belongs in cash or a short fixed deposit, not in a fund that can fall.

Questions readers ask

Should I invest the emergency fund for a higher return?

Only in something you can sell without a surprise loss. The job of this money is to be there. Return is secondary.
